Editor's Note
The end of a year often results in much reminiscing. But we also anxiously await the year that is at hand. As we do so, we can take heart that many leaders are joining the quest to minimise unemployment, boost skills development and create a better world for all.Durban recently hosted the 17th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. National and international attention followed every word – with either interest, critical analysis or apathy. If the conference proved anything, it was that global warming is no longer a subject of interest only to climatologists; it has become a hot topic for every citizen and business leader.
Many citizens are upset about the passing of the Protection of State Information Bill – now known by most as the Secrecy Bill.
On the other hand, many people are ecstatic about the new National Development Plan. It certainly appears to be a good initiative, and one can only hope that – coupled with the government’s New Growth Path – it will yield long-lasting positive results.
The prospect of a new year often leads one to speculate on the potential triumphs or upsets that lie ahead. Will we succeed in creating more effective skills programmes, or sufficient employment opportunities? Will we ensure our graduates are equipped to deal with the business environment they will soon enter?
Ultimately, one can only hope that 2012 will positively reinforce the meaning of the word “ubuntu”, so that we may finally unite as a country.
Globally, South Africa may be seen as a developing country, but I think we should not underestimate our position – and neither should our international counterparts!
Here’s to better things. On behalf of the Achiever team, I wish you well over the festive season. I also wish to extend a word of thanks to all those who have joined us in the development of a great country.
