Good foundationsSkills development remains at the pinnacle of Achiever’s agenda. As a country, we should constantly strive to improve our skilled workforce, so that we may compete on a global level.
Laying a good foundation is key for future success and within South Africa, “foundation” most often refers to our youth.
June 16 has been commemorated yearly for the Soweto riots, when so many young lives were lost.
The youth took a stand and fought for their rights – testament to their tenacity in the fight for freedom and justice, a trait often missing in many adults.
This year, we not only think back and salute those who died fighting for what they believed in, but we also celebrate the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup and play host to the thousands of tourists who will be visiting. This is a golden opportunity for South Africans to ‘show off’ the country’s rich cultural and historical heritage.
For months, people have been focused on the financial gain of the World Cup, doing what they can to survive in 2009 to be able to ‘cash in’ on the 2010 frenzy. Many companies have survived the past financially tumultuous year, barely unscathed.
Many would have done well to make the most of training programmes in order to prepare for 2010, as trained staff are invaluable to a company’s well-being.
The Department of Higher Education and Training has made it an imperative to focus more sternly on its subdivisions, and has been working toward improving the calibre of the country’s tertiary education.
With the reversal of the brain drain, we have acquired much needed professionals who are now able to act as mentors, assisting in providing our students with valuable hands-on, market-related experience that often goes amiss within the pages of textbooks.
